Race to Zero

DISCOVER

Pledging to halve our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and to reach net zero by 2040 as part of our UN Race to Zero campaign

Our pledge

In January 2022, Jacaranda Carpets & Rugs signed up to the SME Climate Hub as recognised by the UN Race to Zero Campaign. In doing so we pledged to halve our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and to reach Net Zero by 2040.

Our pledge requires us to publicly report our annual ‘scope 1’ emissions from owned or controlled energy sources such as vehicles, machines and air conditioning, plus indirect ‘scope 2’ emissions from purchased gas and electricity. You can read our report below.

Our achievements

We are pleased with a significant drop in our Scope 1 emissions. We already create some of our own electricity via solar panels on our warehouse roof and at the end of our current agreement will be switching to a  supplier who uses predominantly renewable energy sources, so we expect our 2024 scope 2 emissions to drop dramatically when the figures become available in late 2025.

In addition, we have examined all aspects of our business to reduce our waste and our carbon footprint. In the last 2 years we have made many changes big and small, here are some examples:

  • In September 2022 we launched Seoni, the world’s first floorcovering handwoven from carbon-zero TENCEL™. By reducing carbon emissions in their production methods and using renewable energy, award-winning TENCEL™ producers Lenzing have created a true carbon-zero fibre, view the range here.
  • We now use UPS’s Carbon Neutral transport scheme for our rug deliveries worldwide. UPS offset carbon emissions through projects such as: reforestation, landfill gas destruction, wastewater treatment and methane destruction.
  • We use 100% recycled & recyclable polythene to ship our handwoven carpets & rugs from India and for packaging them in our UK warehouse. The search goes on for a biobased alternative that is tough enough to protect large rolls and rugs in transit.
  • All incoming and outgoing sampling is now wrapped and padded with fully recyclable card, paper and tape.
Our new refuse collectors send none of our waste to landfill.
  • We now have 5 fully electric cars in our fleet and will buy no more diesel vehicles.
  • Our warehouse JCB and forklift have been replaced by fully electric models.
  • Even our dishwasher tablets are now eco-friendly, and our milk is delivered in re-usable glass bottles.

Our 2023 emissions will be published in autumn 2024.

**Increased electricity emissions are due to our energy consultant committing us, in error, to a supplier being reliant on fossil-based fuels. We will be switching to a new supplier that uses mainly renewable sources at the end of our current agreement in 2024 and will expect to see a dramatic improvement.
