Tackling Carpet Waste with Biodegradable Backing

Carpet waste is a significant environmental issue. It is difficult to collect and recycle carpets from residential premises across the country. They are typically made from layers of different materials, which are often unknown at the end of their life. Large volumes end up in landfill, where synthetic components can take generations to break down. At Jacaranda, we are acutely aware of this challenge. However, creating beautiful carpets that are both durable and fully biodegradable is no easy task.
For over 23 years, Jacaranda has been committed to reducing our environmental impact step by step — and we have recently taken a major leap forward. We have replaced the synthetic grid, previously used to provide structural stability, with a biodegradable cotton primary backing across all but one of our handwoven floor covering ranges. This will break down in landfill, as will the natural wool, silk, cashmere and TENCEL™ pile, as well as the high-quality cotton secondary backing used to finish our carpets and rugs. The thin latex layers remain the one outstanding challenge.
