A love for handmade textures
and natural fibres
The catalyst for Jacaranda Carpets & Rugs was a small carpet sample that we were given over 20 years ago. “This will interest you” they said, “it’s too high end for me, but what wonderful quality, character and texture”. It had of course been handwoven on a traditional hand loom as the majority of our carpets and rugs still are. The skill of the weavers amazed us then and still does today.
Each roll of Jacaranda’s handmade carpet passes through at least 64 hands, across 208 hours, over approximately 31 days. From dying and drying yarn, winding bobbins, and hand-weaving on looms; through backing, shearing, hand-finishing and the all-important quality control. We also take the welfare of our weavers seriously and since our foundation have supported GoodWeave whose aim is to eradicate child labour and to ensure fair treatment of adult carpet weavers. Their factory inspections are random, frequent and unannounced.
That same carpet sample had been handmade from pure, undyed wool. We still believe that wool makes the best carpets and rugs, and that natural tones compliment the most stylish interiors. We still weave exclusively from natural fibres, a decision that is serving us well as the world begins to question the wisdom of non-biodegradable, synthetic materials. We also handweave from the biotic fibre TENCELTM, and from real silk too.
Simplicity has always been a guiding principle at Jacaranda. We’ve kept our collection relatively small. We aim for simplicity of style, concentrating on texture and tone instead of pattern or complexity. We set simple rules such as all carpets are available as rugs, all our stock rugs can also be made-to-measure.
We aim to be honest with our customers. We love the slightly quirky character that can only be handmade, but we are honest in saying that it will not suit all customers. We test all of our floorcoverings so that you can be confident on where each Jacaranda range is suitable for, you will find full test results on all the product pages on this site.
We post on this site too, our progress towards halving our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2040, the goals set by joining the UN Race to Zero Campaign via the SME Climate Hub.
