The first 20 years...
2003 – 2006
With 10 years’ experience already in the importation of high-quality floorcoverings, Richard Meager was on the lookout for a new challenge. His chance meeting with a stunning sample of handmade carpet, initiated a trip to India and a container of carpet on order within a fortnight.
A name was needed for the new company, and several were suggested including Jacaranda. For Richard this evoked memories of a huge Jacaranda tree in the Cape Town garden of his youth. For Richard’s wife Lucy it conjured up teenage travels in New Delhi and streets lined in beautiful Jacaranda blue. Jacaranda, it had to be.
2004 heralded a move from the spare bedroom to a newly converted garage, then on to larger premises on a friend’s farm. Chris Lakin came to assist Richard, and is still with Jacaranda today as Operations Director, a very key member of the team.
In 2006 Lucy Meager joined the company officially, as Jacaranda demanded more of her time and marketing expertise. Today Richard and Lucy run the company as Joint Managing Directors.
2009 – 2012
2009 bought expansion into export. Jacaranda took a stand at Maison Objet in Paris, where we recruited our first overseas distributor. We now distribute to over 40 countries worldwide including most of Europe and North America. Jacaranda has representation in Australia and several Asian countries too.
Jacaranda joined Goodweave this same year. Founded in 1994 by Nobel prize winner and Indian activist Kailish Satyarthi, Goodweave’s mission is to eradicate child and forced labour in textile weaving. They organise truly unannounced and independent inspections of all the facilities that create our carpets and rugs.
2010 marked our first appearance at the Design Centre Chelsea Harbour, the natural choice as the London showcase for Jacaranda’s carpets and rugs. We still inhabit the same showroom on the 2nd floor of Chelsea Harbour’s South Dome. Do please come to visit us.
In 2012, we completed our purpose-built offices and distribution centre in Desborough, Northamptonshire. We have had to expand the warehouse, but Jacaranda is based there today.
2018 – 2022
2018 saw the creation of Jacaranda’s UK rug workshop where we create made-to-measure rugs from all of our textures, finished by hand with high quality, understated edges. This service compliments the rug sizes that we stock, and those bespoke sizes that are handsewn to order in India.
Brexit brought challenges to the business in 2020! Which Jacaranda met head on by building stock at a Dutch distribution hub in addition to our UK operation. This was a great decision that has helped us to improve the service and lead times that we offer our European customers.
In early 2022, Jacaranda signed up to the UN’s race to zero campaign via the SME Climate Hub. We have pledged to halve our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2040.
