Jacaranda’s Progression to Net Zero

DISCOVER

In January 2022, Jacaranda Carpets & Rugs signed up to the SME Climate Hub as recognised by the UN Race to Zero Campaign. In doing so we have pledged to halve our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and to reach Net Zero by 2040.

As we enter the second year of our commitment to become carbon-zero, we want to report an update of our progress.

Combatting Emissions

We have switched our electricity to a provider that generates power with predominantly renewable energy and we will be moving to 100% renewables by February 2024.

We now have 5 fully electric cars in our fleet and will buy no more diesel vehicles.  Our warehouse JCB and forklift have been upgraded and are now fully electric.

Our use of the UPS Carbon Neutral scheme has expanded from UK rug transport to now cover worldwide rug deliveries. UPS offset carbon emissions through projects such as: reforestation, landfill gas destruction, wastewater treatment and methane destruction.

Reducing Waste

Our packaging materials have changed significantly. All our handwoven carpets and rugs are shipped from India in 100% recycled polythene. We have switched our UK packaging to 100% recycled polythene too.

All incoming and outgoing sampling is now wrapped in fully recyclable paper packaging and tape. We have moved away from plastic bubble wrap and use recyclable paper alternatives.

We have reviewed all forms and filing, so the majority is now digital. In house printers are stocked with 100% recycled paper and defaulted to low toner, double-sided settings. All our print uses FSC paper and card which can be fully recycled.

Even our dishwasher tablets are now eco-friendly and our milk is delivered in re-usable glass bottles.

New Launches

In September 2022 we launched Seoni, the world’s first carpet and rug handwoven from carbon-zero TENCEL™. By reducing carbon emissions in production methods and the use of renewable energy, award-winning TENCEL™ producers, Lenzing have created a true carbon-zero fibre, click here to view the range.

Reporting Emissions

As part of the SME Climate hub we must publicly report our annual Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Simply put this means all our emissions from owned or controlled energy sources such as company vehicles, machinery, and air conditioning.  Plus emission from all electricity and gas purchased for our Northamptonshire headquarters and Chelsea Harbour showroom. In addition, we have chosen to log company air miles and to work to reduce these too.

We are pleased to report a significant drop in our Scope 1 emissions in 2021 and we expect them to drop further when our suppliers 2022 figures are released in Autumn 2023. There was an increase in our 2021 scope 2 emissions but we have now switched to a supplier using renewable energy sources and expect these emissions to drop dramatically for 2022. You can see the report here.

Jacaranda have lots more planned for 2023, follow us on Instagram or LinkedIn for regular updates on our progress.

As well as reviewing all aspects of our own business, we are working together with our partners to encourage them to make similar steps. From our production partners, transport companies down to our stationary suppliers.  If you are interested in reducing your impact on the environment, follow the link to find out more about the SME climate Hub and see how your business can help.
